Kitchen Countertop Trends of 2017

 In Home Improvement

So, you’re tired of the state of your kitchen? You’re not alone. Kitchens and bathrooms are the two most common rooms to remodel in a home, and in 2017, kitchen remodeling jumped ahead of bathroom projects for the first time in years. The most popular countertop remodeling trends of the year are falling between “natural” and “neutral” categorization.

Composite Material

In the spirit of eco-friendliness, composite countertops have become a popular material choice in kitchen remodeling. The countertops are made from recycled substance, mostly wood and/or paper, and water-based resin. They’re incredibly durable and resistant to scratches and stains. Composite countertops are also not highly porous, so they inhibit the growth of bacteria on their surfaces. Due to their makeup, they don’t emit radon gasses and are usually free of volatile organic compounds (compounds that can become vapors or gasses without effort). They’re a very safe material, plus they’re made out of substance that would have otherwise been thrown away.

Natural Veining

Wanting something that is both chic and organic in appearance, granite countertops with natural veining is another fashionable option. Veining refers to the lines of color running through a slab of stone, mineral deposits that have been crystalized in the rock. They can add attractive contrasts to a space while keeping a neutral balance of color. They’re also resistant to etchings and when periodically re-sealed, do not easily stain.

Neutral Colors

Homeowners are stepping away from bright colors and pastels and opting for softer, more neutral colors in their kitchens. Tans and greys are replacing blues and greens to make for a space that is much easier to color-coordinate appliances and furnishings. These colors make the room appear larger and create a warm appearance without creating a difficult color scheme. With neutral colors, a kitchen’s theme can be changed repeatedly without having to repaint or replace countertops. Neutral colors compliment everything.

Butcher Blocks

As the desire to use natural materials is coming back into play, so are butcher block countertops. They add natural warmth to a room and they’re long-lasting. Butcher block surfaces are relatively low maintenance and can be sanded and re-finished for a new look as time goes on. Without having to actually replace the countertops, they’ll look and feel like a new piece without a lot of time and effort invested.

If you’re looking for a kitchen project that is going to stand up to the changing styles of coming years as well as being a great investment, any one of these enduring and elegant countertops may be exactly what you’re looking for.
