Target and Disney Partner Up in San Jose

Just in time for the holiday gift-buying season, and in time to take advantage of the momentum from two highly anticipated movie releases in the 4th quarter, Disney has announced plans to augment its retail store presence with a “store-with-a-store” concept, using every suburban mom’s favorite retail outlet – Target. The partnership was announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim.

Disney plans to open 25 such concept stores across the U.S. on October 4. The San Jose Target will host one of only two Target-Disney stores in all of California (the other will be located in Murrieta in Riverside County) . The timing of the launch coincides with the release of merch associated with two of the most highly anticipated films of the year – Frozen 2 (release date: November 22) and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker (release date: December 20).

In addition to merchandising for these two movies, the store-within-a-store retail space will feature products promoting Marvel characters, Disney Junior, traditional Disney plush toys, apparel, and home and holiday decor. The roughly 750-square-foot shops will feature more than 450 products, which includes many items that previously had only been available through Disney’s retail and online stores. The Disney shops will be conveniently located near the kids clothing and toy departments within each Target.

After the initial opening of 25 stores on October 4, the Target-Disney partnership will be extended to an additional 40 more stores through October 2020. In addition, a Target store is planned for the Western entrance of the Walt Disney World Resort, expected to open in 2021.

“We know there’s a very strong overlap between both Disney fans and Target shoppers so we’re looking forward to reaching Disney fans when and where they want to shop,” Target CEO Brian Cornell told USA Today. “It’s an opportunity for us to bring our brands together and delight our guests for years to come.”

The House of Mouse is a master at capturing market momentum, and true to form, the release of highly anticipated films and the launch of new ways to purchase Disney merchandise through Target lines up neatly with Disney’s planned launch of the Disney+ streaming TV service. The November 12 launch will make available a $6.99/moth Disney+ package, or for $12.99/mo, you can bundle Disney+ with ESPN and Hulu (with ads). Disney owns Hulu and ESPN.
